Each year on Yahoo!, searches for cold and flu related terms start rising at the end of September and taper off in May. From “where to get flu shots” and the safety of flu shots to searches for the “super bug,” each year there is a flurry of activity around this topic. Below are some of the Yahoo! Search trends around this Flu and Cold Season:

Typical cold related trends on Yahoo!:

• Searches that are spiking “off the charts” on Yahoo! in the past 30 days include: flu shot clinics, flu vaccine, bird flu pandemic, bird flu news, swine flu symptoms (still!) Note: Off the charts refers to searches that received little to no searches the week/month before and are now gaining interest.
• According to Yahoo!, 56% of searches for “flu shot” are by seniors 55. Other searches include “side effects for flu shots.”
• The top states searching for “flu symptoms” and flu shot” (past year): California, Texas, Illinois, New York, Florida
• The top states already searching “flu symptoms” in September: 1. Florida 2. Texas 3. Virginia 4. California

Self-diagnosis and good old fashioned home remedies.

Whether scared of the doctor or trying to save money, more and more people are turning online to search for symptoms and home remedies before they make an appointment. The majority of searches on Yahoo! for “flu symptoms” are made by women (72%), but surprisingly, over the last month, 28% were made by kids under 13. Top symptoms searched on Yahoo! Include: “common cold symptoms,” “cold vs. flu symptoms,” and “stomach flu symptoms.”

Natural cold and flu remedy searches on Yahoo! follow the curve of flu season, and are on the rise. So far in 2011, they are higher than the previous two years combined.

• Steve Carell vs. Jim Parsons: According to Yahoo!, when it comes to this year’s Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Emmy nominees, men and women seem to be split on who tickles their funny bone.  Of the searches for Emmy nominee, Steve Carell, this year on Yahoo!, 62% of searches come from men; whereas Emmy nominee and last year’s The Big Bang Theory Emmy winner in the category, Jim Parsons, grabs the attention of women — 54% of overall searches for him this year are coming from females.
• SNL Alums Compete: In looking at Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the two notable SNL alums nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy, Yahoo! searches this week for “Tina Fey” are up 240%; slightly higher than searches for “Amy Poehler,” who is seeing a 157% spike in searches. Will one of the SNL ladies be able to beat out Edie Falco, 2010 winner in the category of Best Lead Actress in a Comedy? 
• Hugh Tops Searches: Hugh Laurie is by far the most searched best actor in a drama nominee on Yahoo!. This year, he got more searches than all of the other nominees combined and 3x the searches for Timothy Olyphant.
• Mariska Dominates the Ladies: And, when it comes to Best Lead Actress in a Drama, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s Mariska Hargitay has led the charge in searches this year on Yahoo!.  Of the searches for all the lead actress nominees, searches for “Mariska Hargitay” this year are 9 times higher than those of “Julianna Margulies” and over 1,000 times higher than those of “Elisabeth Moss.”  66% of the overall searches for “Mariska Hargitay” come from men.

According to Yahoo!, 90% of searches for “Kardashian Wedding” are from women between the ages of 25-44 with California, Texas, New York, Louisiana and Minnesota searching the most for Kim’s big day. Even though women are searching the most for Kim’s wedding, turns out they’re not as interested in her everyday life as 61% of searches for “Kim Kardashian” come from men!  

Keeping Up. Kim’s not the only popular family member, since the beginning of the season searches on Yahoo! have more than doubled for the show on E! and it seems the youngest siblings are gaining popularity among online users. After appearances at the Teen Choice Awards and Justin Bieber’s shout out on Twitter last week, searches for Kim’s half-sister “Kendall Jenner” are spiking 1308% on Yahoo!.

 Kim vs. Khloe. Since Khloe and Lamar’s courtship only lasted one month before they took the plunge, it’s hard to compare the two weddings in terms of popularity, but according to Yahoo!, Khloe has only ever surpassed her sister Kim in online searches the week of her wedding to Lamar in 2009 and even then her first place status only lasted 9 days. However, that has not stopped online comparisons between the sister’s bling. According to Yahoo!, 11% of searches for “Kardashian ring” were from people comparing the size of Khloe’s ring to Kim’s (9 carats to 20.5 respectively.)
