A Delicious Anniversary

With over 180 million unique URLs tagged, Delicious is celebrating its five year anniversary. To date, 5.3 million users have turned to Delicious to enhance their social search experience. Not only is it a free and easy way for people to discover, tag and share web content, it continues to evolve to provide greater value to the Delicious community through the introduction of new features, such as browser add-ons or an improved user interface.

Making Social Bookmarking a bit more Delicious

Today, our teammates across the way rolled out the newest version of the social bookmarking site Delicious (formerly known as Delicious), which offers enhanced performance and search capabilities along with a brand new user interface.

The Delicious team has detailed the changes on their blog, but here’s a quick look at what’s new:

Improved Performance — With a new more scalable infrastructure, Delicious can better keep up with the growing traffic while still providing you with the same reliability and responsiveness.

Powering Up Search — By packing more power into the search engine, the overall performance has improved, delivering search results much more quickly. You can now also search within one of your tags, another user’s public bookmarks, or your social network.

New Design — Since a picture is worth a thousand words, we’ll just show you…

Yahoo! has flipped the switch and we expect all users will be able to experience the new Delicious by this afternoon. Once you’ve had a chance to play around with the new site, visit the also-new discussion forum and let them know how things are working for you.

Delicious Bookmarks for IE: Delivered

The Delicious team has been busy with its recent GA release of bookmarks for Firefox 3, and today, they’re making their extension for Internet Explorer generally available as well. Delicious Bookmarks for Firefox 3 Officially Here

At the end of April, the Delicious team announced a new beta add-on for Firefox 3 and after gathering some great feedback from those who had downloaded the extension, they’re announcing its general availability.

There are a number of performance and stability enhancements with this release of Delicious bookmarks for Firefox 3, so check out the Delicious blog for a list of some of the generally available features.

Internet Explorer Gets More Delicious

Since many Delicious users use Internet Explorer as their primary browser, the Delicious team has announced an early beta release of the Delicious bookmarks extension for Internet Explorer. There are similarities between this version and the recently released Firefox 3 beta extension — including features such as the Delicious Sidebar and Toolbar for quick access to your bookmarks. The extension works on IE 6, IE 7 and IE 8 beta for both XP and Vista. Check out the Delicious blog for more background.

Better Bookmarks for Firefox 3

The Delicious team has been working on a new beta add-on for the also-still-in-beta Firefox 3 to give users easier and quicker access to information. While maintaining full compatibility with the previous add-on for Firefox 2, the latest version offers a few new features, which they’ve detailed in their post.

The New Yahoo! Bookmarks and Toolbar Get a Refresh

Back in October we launched the new Yahoo! Bookmarks and Yahoo! Toolbar to make it easier for users to save, organize, and find their favorite websites. Key features included the ability to easily organize with folders or tags, and the ability to instantly find bookmarks directly from the Yahoo! Toolbar searchbox. Today, we’re announcing the general availability, on Firefox and IE, with a few new updates including integration with popular Yahoo! properties, personalized recommendations for suggested bookmarks and enhanced features for organizing and managing bookmarks.

Based directly on the feedback we received from our customers, here’s what bookmarks and toolbar now offer:

Bookmarks Quick List
To help navigate and organize bookmarks better, IE users (to start) can now move any bookmark into a “Quick List” and it will appear at the top level of the Yahoo! Bookmarks menu (instead of in a folder sub-menu). Users can limit the number of bookmarks that are in the Quick List by going to the Yahoo! Bookmarks Preferences.

New Integrations with Yahoo! Properties
To provide a more personalized experience, bookmarks now offers integration with Yahoo! Mail to quickly and easily save links directly from email. With the huge number of links received through email, it’s about bringing the bookmarks functionality to places that users need it most. In the future, users can look forward to additional bookmarks integration with other Yahoo! properties.

Delicious Bookmarks, Firefox and you

Browsing and browsers go hand in hand, so it was an easy decision to use Mozilla’s add-on system for Firefox to seamlessly integrate Delicious into the Web browser. Since we launched the first version of our Delicious Bookmarks add-on in October, many users utilize our extension daily to manage and remember their favorite bookmarks. With features like integrated tagging, a custom toolbar and a browser-integrated sidebar so you can search your bookmarks, the response has been great.

Today’s release is the culmination of months of gathering feedback and turning it into real improvements for our users. The latest extension allows you to easily import, manage, share, search and sort thousands of bookmarks from within Firefox in a way that is familiar to anyone who’s ever bookmarked a page in a web browser.

Since our release in October, we’ve added an all-new sidebar that incorporates sorting and related tag options, and performance has also been improved for users with lots of bookmarks. And, if you tried the extension a couple of months ago and weren’t quite ready to let go of your Firefox bookmarks, we’ve brought them back. Whether you’re new to Delicious or you’ve been with us from the start, we hope you’ll find our extension to be a useful and powerful tool for handling your bookmarks.

Under the Covers (and Across the Pond) with Yahoo! Bookmarks

A couple of weeks ago, we announced the beta of the new Yahoo! Bookmarks. Since then, we’ve added support for 16 international properties, including Taiwan and Germany, giving you the the power of online bookmarks with the convenience of local language: Fantastico.

We also wanted to chime in about our use of symfony to build the new Bookmarks. Michael Salisbury, one of the technical Yahoo!’s on this project, spoke with the symfony folks and his remarks are written up over there. symfony is an open source PHP web framework that aims to speed up the creation and maintenance of web applications and we chose it because it really worked for what we needed. As Michael noted, the configurability of symfony made it possible not only to translate the interface, but also to customize features for various countries and localize the application completely.

Better Bookmarks, Better Toolbar

We’re here to introduce the new beta versions of the Yahoo! Toolbar (for IE) and Yahoo! Bookmarks.

Bookmarks first appeared on the Yahoo! Toolbar in 1999. Back then, the big virtues of online bookmarks were backup and portability – Yahoo! Bookmarks allowed people to store their favorites from across the web and get to them from any computer connected to the Internet. Fast forward to 2006, and our experiences with next-generation bookmarking have convinced us that it was time to bring Yahoo! Bookmarks users onto a new and better product.

Here’s a quick rundown of the new features on both products. Long-time users of Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Bookmarks should find that this combined release delivers a lot of what they’ve been waiting for (and we’ll be the first to admit, its about #@*! time)

New Yahoo! Toolbar Features:

Toolbar integration with the new Yahoo! Bookmarks
Type-ahead bookmark suggestions from the toolbar search box
The ability to create and use new buttons, even when you aren’t signed in

And for Yahoo! Bookmarks:

Advanced search functionality
Thumbnails for quickly recognizing sites
Convenient drag-and-drop management
Organize bookmarks with folders and tags
Ability to save page content along with the URL
Editing abilities when saving
An end to the 1000 bookmark limit

The all new Yahoo! Bookmarks will focus on personal saving, organization, and recovery while our comrades at Delicious will concentrate on meeting your social bookmarking and sharing needs. For users of MyWeb, your bookmarks are safe, and in a few months you’ll be able to roll over to either Yahoo! Bookmarks or Delicious. We’ll explain this process more thoroughly in future posts.
