Weather Report: Yahoo! Search update
We've rolled out some changes to our index with fresh web data and updates to our crawling, indexing and ranking algorithms over the last few days. We expect the update will be completed very soon. Throughout this process you may see some changes in ranking as well as some shuffling of the pages in the index.
This is the first update after the launch of Dynamic URL Rewriting in Site Explorer. We've had millions of URLs rewritten based on your submissions and your sites should have seen smarter crawling from Yahoo! Slurp as a result. You will see further benefits in how your site is represented in the index from this update. Your input improves relevance and coverage for users in search results, particularly in relation to your site.
Thank you for collaborating with us to improve our understanding of your site. If you haven't yet, login and try out the feature to authenticate your sites.
Keep the feedback coming...

I have given up on Yahoo... there is no consistency.

awesome, this re-index is by far the best. I'm seeing more variety on the top listings and less spam. Keep up the great work (and that's a lot coming from me!)

I can't be bothered with Yahoo update such as this one anymore.
A lot of your results still doesn't make sense to me

Funny! I've lost several position on yahoo, and in the meanwhile I gained plenty on google for same keywords. So far it looks to like websites with high budget are on top, regarding of content.
I'm disappointed.

This looks to be one of the best updates I have seen in a ling time. Maybe a bit too much emphasis on google- and yahoo groups, but overall it looks very very good.

Good update, it seems to bring back a far higher relevancy in results.

What kind of improvements am I expecting to see? Sorry but "smarter crawling" and "further benefits" are just too vague for me to understand.

Yahoo is having problems expanding its market share above 20% in search, and the most searched for term used on the engine is "Google", which probably means that the actual share of the market in terms of actual searches is much lower than 20%. Within the whole travel vertical in the UK, Yahoo have a share of around 3% according to Hitwise.
In order to increase the trust people put in the results offered by Yahoo! search, why not consider these options:
1) Invest in improving quality of searches and identifying spam results so that users get what they are looking for in a single click, rather than having to go through a shabby MFA website.
2) Avoid placing multiple versions of the same website in the top 10 results for a vast number of products despite - if users want to compare deals.
3) Invest in proper screening of poor quality websites based on obvious factors such as duplicate content, massive use of rss aggregation to populate blogs.
4) Understand that certain financial sites are not getting 20 million links naturally - and pay attention to the fact that the vast majority of these links are created through an automated link exchange network that is easily identifiable thanks to a 1px gif that is served with the links.
Of course, if your main intention in search is to provide questionable natural results in order to make the paid search area look more attractive, then you will succeed by moving in the direction you are currently exploring.
Search needs strong competition to encourage improvements across all platforms. Presenting this current standard of results will not give any of the other engines cause to innovate.

I really really wish Yahoo would disclose why a page would be penalized and if they're being penalized in site explorer. This would significantly help webmasters determine why they are being dropped from search engine results and fix any problems.

Hi,
I have noticed right away as I was affected with at least 25 search phrases.Dropping from page 1 so drastically that I couldn't find in within <100 results.
I'm really hoping that the update will progress in a good way, optimizing relevant search results, dropping spam out and I will get my site back listing on the first page!
Hoping for a better YAHOO!

The update has been completed - and to add a climax, the new look debuts
It appears that Concept Searching is being embedded in the organic algos - as well as a bit of AJAX

Well it's done and we all hope it's for good. Actually my N1s does not appear anymore. Sites with no relevance and poor content, or search engine spammers plenty of "Google ads" and nothing else are in the first places for some keywords. But, we know re indexing will take sometime. It's hard to believe that sites plenty of rich, fresh and exclusive content, that is what really matters, have disappeared after the upgrade. In my case, secondary pages are in top ten or top twenty. But not the relevant pages for business. I also noticed that email spammers sites are the big fishes now in Yahoo search. Keep working. Good sites always win. Back up! just in case!
