Better Bookmarks, Better Toolbar

We're here to introduce the new beta versions of the Yahoo! Toolbar (for IE) and Yahoo! Bookmarks.

Bookmarks first appeared on the Yahoo! Toolbar in 1999. Back then, the big virtues of online bookmarks were backup and portability - Yahoo! Bookmarks allowed people to store their favorites from across the web and get to them from any computer connected to the Internet. Fast forward to 2006, and our experiences with next-generation bookmarking have convinced us that it was time to bring Yahoo! Bookmarks users onto a new and better product.

Here's a quick rundown of the new features on both products. Long-time users of Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Bookmarks should find that this combined release delivers a lot of what they've been waiting for (and we'll be the first to admit, its about #@*! time)

New Yahoo! Toolbar Features:

  • Toolbar integration with the new Yahoo! Bookmarks
  • Type-ahead bookmark suggestions from the toolbar search box
  • The ability to create and use new buttons, even when you aren't signed in

And for Yahoo! Bookmarks:

  • Advanced search functionality
  • Thumbnails for quickly recognizing sites
  • Convenient drag-and-drop management
  • Organize bookmarks with folders and tags
  • Ability to save page content along with the URL
  • Editing abilities when saving
  • An end to the 1000 bookmark limit

The all new Yahoo! Bookmarks will focus on personal saving, organization, and recovery while our comrades at del.icio.us will concentrate on meeting your social bookmarking and sharing needs. For users of MyWeb, your bookmarks are safe, and in a few months you'll be able to roll over to either Yahoo! Bookmarks or del.icio.us. We'll explain this process more thoroughly in future posts.

Please drop us a comment below or visit the forums for feedback on the betas.

Thanks!
The Yahoo! Toolbar & Bookmarks Teams

PS ? Tom Chi produced this helpful screencast that walks you through the new functionality. Enjoy!

I was using My Web, I guess I will have to switch to del.icio.us (in a few months) to be able to keep sharing my bookmarks, to have RSS feeds, ...

Why not integrate Yahoo! Bookmarks, My Web and del.icio.us in one product ? It would be less confusing and anyway you are never forced to share your bookmarks (as del.icio.us has private bookmarks too).

When I will have to switch to del.icio.us, I hope I will be able to use my Yahoo! ID and won't need to sign into del.icio.us if I already signed into Yahoo! (with Flickr when I'm signed into Yahoo, I still have to sign into Flickr despite I sign in with the same Yahoo ID and password, which is a little bit annoying).

Where is the Firefox integration? Sidebar or something please.

Hi Michael, one of our team leads, Tomi Poutanen, left this comment over on TechCrunch: "Behind the scenes, we are extending the social bookmarking platform built for MyWeb to store the data for Yahoo Bookmarks and soon del.icio.us. This will allow for seamless migration from one service to another while preserving your existing bookmarks." So they will be integrated. W/r/t just having one product, Tom Chi also left a comment over there about offering fries and mashed potatoes that you really just have to go read. :-)

///For users of MyWeb, your bookmarks are safe, and in a few months you'll be able to roll over to either Yahoo! Bookmarks or del.icio.us. We'll explain this process more thoroughly in future posts.///

Safe? I've already loss more than 200 MyWeb bookmarks (cached copy) because of Yahoo Bookmarks. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Am4_XQ5wMvq7tYLsX8eHbhjsy6IX?qid=20061025020935AAYL5sA

not to rain on your parade, because it looks like you've put a large amount of work into it, but, it's hard to use.

now, not hard to use as in the ui is confusing. it's actually really sexy. no -- hard because it's a lot of work.

for it to be successful (aside from better sharing features, of course), it needs to have the simplicity that is the del.icio.us posting bookmark. it needs to be "fire and forget" when it comes to tracking bookmarks.

these are the killer features for me in del.icio.us:

1) clickable "recommended tags"
2) clickable "your tags"
3) clickable "popular tags"

see a trend? it takes me about 3 seconds to bookmark and tag anything with del.icio.us. and, it takes less than that to find my bookmark again because, as i type the url, i just append one of the tags i "think" it "might" be related to in the url.

in. out. done. you fire and forget, because, in reality, none of us go back and actually even look at 2/3 of the sites we bookmark.

dragging for a single "classification" step, while neat, just takes too long. if it takes too long, nobody will use it effectively. and those multiple boxes for tags? what is that?

m3mnoch.

TanNg,
Everyone of the team is really sorry about your bookmarks. We actually just put in a fix so people get an extra warning on delete to tell them that this connects to their MyWeb data as well. I know it's a little too late to help your specific case :(

m3mnoch,
Thanks for the helpful input on tagging. When we went out to meet and interview some of the (20 million!) people that use Yahoo Bookmarks, we found out that most of them really didn't "get" tagging -- so we didn't spend as much time on our first release tuning tag entry and tag suggestions as you might have liked.

We'll look into this for later releases.

Nobody has answered the all important question for me yet: How long until we see a FIREFOX toolbar with this incorporated into it?

Thanks for the answer and the explanation about the future integration of del.icio.us and Yahoo! Bookmarks on the same platform. As you explain it, it seems very good. I'm looking forward to this integration.

By the way, the design of the new Yahoo! Bookmarks is very nice and easy to use (but as it doesn't allow public bookmarks and RSS I prefer My Web / del.icio.us).

Every time I try Yahoo toolbar I end up uninstalling it. I see 100 buttons unless I sign-in to personalize it. It is eyesore. Also, Whenever I open a new browser window, it waits for sign-in. They should populate it using local preferences and then sync whenever a user signs-in (like Google TB, which is simple, elegant and with neat spell checker). Please remember KISS principle

@ Tomchi
I'm not blame Y! Bookmarks teams, every beta software have bug. I should check before deleting so many bookmarks.

I wonder if we will have export/achieve options (I mean full page cached copy and tags, not bookmarks only).

I would love to move over to Del.icio.us right now, but I'm stymied by it not allowing more than 1 word tags (without those underscores) like MyWeb does.

So, my question is this: will del.icio.us allow multi-word tags soon, and, thus, our MyWeb saves will go over in that form?

Not for Firefox, not interesting, I'm afraid.

Dan Kearns:
If multi-word tags are important and you have things like SanFrancisco or san_francisco, have a look at Simpy - http://www.simpy.com/ . Here is an old blog post that talks about SImpy advantages, including multi-word tags, comma vs. space, plural vs. singular tags, tag intersections, unions, and negations, etc.:

http://blog.simpy.com/blojsom/blog/2005/08/15/Why_Simpy_over_del_icio_us.html

"We'll look into this for later releases."

Will we have to wait another 7 years for another release?

(Sorry if I'm jaded. After Yahoo blocked my email account illegally and their HORRENDOUS customer service didn't restore it, I hate yahoo. Frankly, I'm pissed that Yahoo bought Delicious. I only got my account restored by complaining to the Better Business Bureau - proof that yahoo was at fault not me.)

How do you select multiple tags? I've tried editing the URL using both plus (delicious style) and comma (myweb style) and neither works.

Why isn't del.icio.us more integrated with Yahoo anyway? I only started using it yesterday and I can't use my Yahoo account there. And since Yahoo has updated its bookmark service, I may abandon my del.icio.us account and move my stuff in Y!

Scott-O-Rama -

Yahoo! Toolbar for Firefox released an update a few weeks ago (v1.3)
which focused on being compatible for the FF 2.0 release this week. (It
did include some enhancements to search box including Search Suggest.)

We are currently working on integrating the new Beta Bookmarks into the
Firefox version of Yahoo! Toolbar, but we have not announced release
date for 1.4 yet.

Yahoo! Toolbar Team

I swear, if u guys throw away MyWeb, I'm gonna be pissed! Seriously guys, I started as a del.icio.us user, but when I saw the changes made to MyWeb, I packed my delicious bookmarks and came home to MyWeb. Ever since then I've been happy. Now ur scarrying by telling us that u might discontinue MyWeb. I don't care for delicious. I'm perfectly satisfied with MyWeb thank you very much.

Very nice! Is there much custom UI Javascript, or could I do something similar with the Y! UI library?

It's seriously cool and I'd love to make my websites have the same kind of experience...

Sal, Dan Kearns,

We appreciate the features of MyWeb as much as you do -- Although we are retiring the brand, we intend to make the migration path to either Bookmarks or delicious as painless as possible. For now, hold tight -- the bookmarks product is still in Beta, but the GA version is slated to have features that MyWeb users can feel at home with.

The upcoming improvements to delicious are no slouch either!

Hi!

Yesterday, I installed Yahoo! Toolbar Beta 7.0 in my work computer. After this, I installed Yahoo! Toolbar Beta in my home computer and signed in. For my disillusionment, the shortcuts that I configured at work didn't appear when I signed in to Yahoo! Toolbar 7.0 at home. After I tried retrieve shortcuts buttons at home without success, I tried sign out the Toolbar and I saw that the shortcuts buttons that I configured when I was signed in still were being shown when I was signed out. So, I tried sign in to Yahoo! with another Yahoo! ID and I saw that Toolbar wasn't refreshed with the shortcuts from this other Yahoo! ID and the shortcuts from the first Yahoo! ID don't disappeared automatically to give place to the shortcuts of the second Yahoo! ID.

I always clicked in "Refresh toolbar" trying to solve this issue, but it didn't function.

I'm feeling that the shortcuts of this new Toolbar aren't being stored online.
If you removes the mobility characteristic from the new Yahoo! Toolbar, it will lose its great difference from other toolbars like Google Toolbar or Windows Live Toolbar. It is just the mobility that makes Yahoo! Toolbar be so special.

The only buttons that refresh automatically are the settings button and the button to access the Yahoo! Bookmarks. Ah! And the list of groups under the drop down menu of the Groups button also is refresh automatically when I sign in with other Yahoo! ID.

In addition, I don't want that other users of the same computer who I use see the shortcuts that I configured and I simply HATED to have to configure ALL the shortcuts ALL time that I access the Yahoo! Toolbar in a different computer!

I want to believe that this is just a beta bug issue that you will fix until the final version release. But if you are really adding this characterist to the new Yahoo! Toolbar I will go to be really DISAPPOINTED and IRRITATED. I like so much to use Yahoo! Toolbar... since that it has mobility!

Think carefully on this.

(I like the new look of the Yahoo! Toolbar but I think that will be better if you add 3D or glossy effects on the icons.)

Thank you Yahoo! Team!

Hi Luis,

You are correct that the new Beta toolbar keeps your layout local instead of with your Yahoo! ID. Bookmarks and other settings within buttons like Groups, Mail, Movies, etc... are still personalized with your Yahoo! ID, but the buttons that appear on the toolbar are no longer tied to your Yahoo! ID.

Our thinking...

1) We hope we've made button customization easy enough for folks who have Yahoo! Toolbar on more than one computer. I personally enjoyed layout portability too, but I also like that I can now have different buttons at work and at home -- and I especially like always having my buttons even when I'm signed out of Yahoo!.

2) For sites you do want to access from anywhere, you can save to Yahoo! Bookmarks, and they will always be portable with your Yahoo! ID.

3) We will have a way to import your previous buttons from your Yahoo! ID. (Under Settings, but not working yet.) We have not ruled out evolving this into a way for people to save and take their layouts with them (like a Classic Toolbar mode or even multiple profiles on the same computer). But we have other things to find and fix first.

I believe a lot of people like me will miss layout portability, but we are outnumbered by the 100 million+ toolbar users who don't understand why their buttons changed when they signed in and out of Yahoo! Mail. We'd love to hear from more folks like you, in order to help us prioritize when to work on bringing back layout portability as an option.

Thanks,

/duke
Yahoo! Toolbar Team

please could you keep an option to have a widescreen Bookmarks? I hate having to use the narrow version which presently uses only 50% of my screen.

Hi duke

Really thanks for you answer.

Anyway, I really wish that you also think about a form to include the use way that users of the Yahoo! Toolbar like I have.

And I would like you know that I only choose and started to use Yahoo! Toolbar many years ago because of its portability. It would not be the end of the world if you took off this function of the Toolbar, but I never more would feel free in using it as before. One click is much more cool than to have to access my favorites sites into a menu. And my favorites sites could not be the same favorites sites of my work friend that share the same computer to me.

Until today, my first action to start to surf in the Web was sign in into my Yahoo! (not the service My Yahoo!, but the account that I have in Yahoo!) to retrive my information (personal and PRIVATE one-click easy access to my bookmarks) that I have kept online and I take with me wherenever I went. Now, I don't need to login in Yahoo! because I can have access to links exactly signed out. I think this is a marketing strategy error, because now, you had taken off the need of the web audience to access their Yahoo! accounts to use Internet. In other words, people leave to use the Yahoo! but they don't leave to use the Internet. Understand?

A improvement suggestion:

You could add a option in Yahoo! Toolbar to organize multiple toolbar layouts.
Example: now I would like to work, so I sign in my work Yahoo! Toolbar layout and all my work buttons appears. After, I would like to enjoy online, so I change to my fun Toolbar and all my web funtime shortcuts appears.

anyway, thanks your work!

When will the Bookmarks add-in be functional again in My Yahoo?

I wanted to see what the beta bookmarks looked like and without warning have made my my.yahoo page nearly useless. I used to have easy access to them on the left side of the screen but after just testing the beta bookmarks they're gone, just a notice telling me they're no longer supported.

You guys are overusing AJAX. It's working on yahoo mail but every other beta I've tried is taking a serious usability and performance hit. Bookmarks, Yahoo Photos, and TV Listings all need to revert. And as many others have noted, you already own redundant, superior services like Flickr, why have 2?

After over a decade of making yahoo and then my.yahoo my homepage I'm looking into switching to a custom Google homepage if I can't resolve the bookmarks issue.

Tom -- I'm sorry you're disappointed with the use of AJAX on the new bookmarks. As the primary developer on many of these features, I agree that the current implementation could use some serious performance optimization.

Rest assured that we're working on these performance improvements for our next couple of releases, as well as the ability to turn off some of the more advanced features through your preferences. We'll let you know through this blog when these options are available.

Also, the My Yahoo! team is working on a new module for Bookmarks as we speak. I don't know the ETA however, sorry.

After the introduction of beta.bookmarks.yahoo.com, i have lost all my bookmarks in myweb2. I just followed the instructions and now "Myweb bookmarks" folder is empty in bete.bookmarks.

I have lost 1000s of bookmarks. I am even ready to pay a fee to recover my myweb2 bookmarks.

help / any suggestions is much appreciated.

When will Yahoo Bookmarks come out of beta with some changes that are very necessary? I.e. ability to edit the url of a bookmark, ability to open links in a new window without right click, ability to NOT create duplicate entries (based on url), ability to move a bookmark when editing it rather than as a separate process.
Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

nsskumar -- Bookmarks and MyWeb share the same database, so you can't really 'move' items between the two. However, if you delete items from one, they are gone in the other as well. Keep that in mind (we display a warning when you do this in the 'delete' action on Bookmarks).

Alister -- We won't be allowing the editing of a bookmark anytime soon, because of the way our database is designed: in effect what we'd be doing is deleting the old item and adding a new one.

Also, we put a lot of effort into trying to keep the bookmark list as un-cluttered with extra links or extraneous actions. That's why we didn't include a link to allow you to open a link in a new window (we personally like the right-click option, as it allows you to open a URL in a new window OR tab) or put the 'move' command into 'edit'. Since there are two other ways to 'move' an item (with an action, or via Drag n' Drop), we felt these were sufficient.

But thanks for the feedback -- we'll keep these ideas in mind as we continue to work on the product. This type of user feedback is really important to us, and we continue to re-evaluate the choices we make along the way based on what we hear from our users.

Nathan, thanks very much for your response - it is much appreciated.

How do I get to the old bookmarks in order to back them up?

The new Yahoo Bookmarks is missing A TON of my bookmarks on my new computer, but my old computer with the older toolbar has them all, but I can't get to the old bookmarks management page, the new management page is missing a lot of my bookmarks.

Please help, these bookmarks are very important to me.

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Nathan, I forgot to ask about the duplicating of urls. Currently it appears that you can create duplicates. Have you looked at changing the system so this cannot happen? The problem is that sometimes one adds a URL that is already in the bookmarks and ends up with many of the same over time.
Thanks again.

Tim -- All bookmarks should be in the new system, is it possible you're just not seeing them? Go to bookmarks.yahoo.com and perform a search for a bookmark that you can't find.

The biggest change between these two versions is that there's no more 'root' folder where you can put frequently used bookmarks that aren't within a folder. We've moved to simply putting these within an "uncategorized" folder instead. Take a look in there -- and let us know if they're not there. If they're not, please log the details here:

http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/ysearch/cgi_bkmk2_feedback

Alister -- the system only allows one save of a particular URL. We do have a bug that allows you to *think* you're saving multiple copies of the same URL, but we're addressing it for the next release. What will happen is that if you click 'save' on a URL you already have, we'll change the 'add' interface into an 'edit' interface.

So yes, we're aware of the issue and it's being addressed right now :) Thanks for the note.

Alister I think I figured out whats going on. The bookmarks are now split into what I would consider 'old method' and 'MyWeb'. If I don't see a bookmark under the familar location, I have to go to MyWeb to find the bookmarks. This is a bit of a pain and causes A LOT of confusion for many people. Just search the web for "Yahoo bookmarks missing" and you'll see what I mean.

I honestly don't see much benefit to this new toolbar and will continue using the old toolbar until I can't, then if this issue is not resolved I'll switch to Google toolbar (which I'm sure a lot of people already have).

Tim

MyWeb and Y! Bookmarks share a database, therefore you bookmarks are available (and visible) in both MyWeb and Yahoo! Bookmarks. It's impossible for them to only appear in one and not the other.

http://www.bookmarks.yahoo.com

It's important to remember that all the bookmarks that were formerly in the 'root' folder, are now in the 'uncategorized' folder. Also, you can use the search function in the bookmarks site -- it's a fast and easy way of finding a bookmark that's been misplaced.

Sorry, above URL should be:

http://bookmarks.yahoo.com

i too have lost many bookmarks (and regained old deleted ones) in the transfer from old to new bookmarks. really quite a disappointment.

what may help:

right now, "quick access" only displays 1) Recently Saved and 2)Quick List. what would be incredibly intuitive and helpful would be to be able to see "ALL" bookmarks in folders from the dropdown menu in the toolbar. it's crazy that you cannot see all of your old bookmarks in the new toolbar drop down menu. how this has gone overlooked is beyond me.

Michael posted on 10/25/06 that he hopes to be able to login to delicious using his Yahoo id. I have the opposite desire: I want my e-mail accounts to be separate from everything else. I can't stand it when things are tied together. I use delicious in part because it's separate from everything else. No side effects! No single sign-on (which, when switching e-mails, becomes single sign-off) for me! I give that the single finger!

But, for some people, who trust big faceless corporations to know what's best for them, they should have the option of having One Account To Rule Them All.

Flexibility is the key.
