Yahoo!'s Year End Party Celebration
No -- I don't show up here only to post about the Yahoo! parties, but we did have one doozy of a year end party (YEP) this past Saturday night in SF. This was my fifth YEP and as with all the previous years, I thoroughly enjoy seeing friends and colleagues dressed in something other than t-shirts and jeans!
In addition to the ice sculptures, amazing food and great music, one of the reasons I love attending the YEP, is the charity auction held every year. The auction starts a week in advance online through Yahoo! Auctions and culminates with in-person bidding at the YEP for the big ticket items. We all have the chance to bid on cool donated items and experiences ranging from a Stanford hoops game with Jerry & David or an LA movie premiere from Terry, to coveted parking spots or a weekend in Tahoe. Proceeds go to the Yahoo! Employee Foundation(YEF), our grassroots philanthropic organization that helps out non-profits in the community. Proceeds from both the online and live auction brought more than $120,000 to YEF, far more than any previous YEF auction.
A great way to start out the holiday season!

Looks like a nice party. However, since your customer base is circling the drain, it seems likely to be one of the last, maybe a couple years more. Y'see, I've been to a lot of forums hunting down what the problem is with your system vs. proxies, and I have yet to hear a good word about you anywhere. You're pissing off the people who pay the bills. For example, I have numerous free AND paid accounts. Haven't been able to access any of them for days because of your useless "Error 999" login failure pages. Can't get customer service, can't get assistance, can't get anyone to seriously address the problem without some cutsy-pie blog entry -- in short, I'm the classic Yahoo customer, taking a routine hosing and being expected to just suck it up. Well, here's the scoop. I use a proxy (anonymizer) for good reason, and I have no slightest intention of rearranging my life because you can't sort out how to deal with net problems. Just in case you haven't pulled your head out far enough to do a subject search on your own system, (or better yet, a search on Google) "error 999" is becoming a MAJOR issue -- LOTS of people use proxies, and many don't even know it. As for me, it will take a few weeks to get everything transferred somewhere else and let everyone know that I've given the big swirly to Yahoo, Geocities, and Small Business hosting, but you can rest assured we aren't done yet...I'll badmouth you everywhere I can find a forum to do it. Thanks a pantload, Yahoo. I don't expect any of this to show up on the Company website -- after all if you don't notice it, it didn't happen. Party on, doods.

Looks cool. No idea if the comments preceding mine are true, but the idea that you guys do this, and do it repeatedly, is heartening. Good going.

I am receiving tons of Error 999 complaints from my website's users. When I try to access the site, I get 999 messages as well. When I do a search on the Yahoo! Support board for 999 errors, I get an unrelated response. What's going on, YAHOO!? Communicate with us!!!!!!!

I received numerous Error 999 complaints from my website's users on Tuesday 1/11/05. When I tried to access the site that morning, I got the 999 message as well. When I did a search on the Yahoo! Support board for 999 errors, I found only unrelated information. Checked website's stats and was not outside of bandwidth limitations for the month, nor could I locate any other problems. Finally, on the Yahoo Chat Board got a Telephone number to call [Yahoo Paid Accts 866-800-8092 and Free Accts 408-349-3300] and spoke with a tech named "Ben" [very knowledgable and helpful], but after he checked everything that he could from his end, he was still unable to find the cause of the problem. He got my telephone contact information, and said he was going to refer this case [Yahoo Case 1053360] to other staff to research, and I would get a call from them explaining what had happened and why. This morning [Wednesday 01/13/05 - Two days later] got a call from from them, and the lady said that she had checked, and it seemed to be working NOW. Said that she guessed that "the website had corrected itself." I told her that websites do not have the capability to correct themselves -- that it was a server problem -- that I had checked myself and had found the website finally back on line at 11:30 PM CST on the 11th. Thanked her and hung up.
From what I have been able to find via internet searches, the Yahoo Geocities 999 error problem has been going on for some months now, and may be increasing.
ALSO one of the tracker monitors that I employ indicated a load problem with the website last Tuesday 01/04/05, so will be checking to see if there is another problem this next Tuesday.

I have tried Frederick's advice:
"To Reload your page:
View your page again and press the "Shift" button down on your keyboard
at the same time clicking on the Reload/Refresh button on your browser."
the problem still persists

I have exactly the same problem.
Since a few days.
Also certain groupes are suddenly unreadable.
I think because they are overloaded with visitors.
You get a message that the downloadlimit has exceeded.
The new one I encountered tonight also the 999 problem.
Yahoo has build in strange options by the way also in the administration of Yahoogroups.
Certain settings are not reversable.
Setting Nomore Members makes the groups invisible and can not be changed back.
And there are more of these.
Group owners be carefull !
You can guess the results ofcourse
Help files give no help at all.
Problem in this case.
A group was hacked.
Somebody messed around with incoming messages.
So they called me for help.
I went in to it and all administrator passwords are changed for safety same like the administrator adresses.
For safety I have to make use of another IP Adress.
Result no acces.
Everything is already smooth in the group settings can only be changed by the administrators again.
But the worst off all is right now the 999 can not login.
What a service is this?
I think this could be done better.
Yahoo has experience enough I guess to work something out.
So I hope they improve things.
Pressing SHIFT by the way and reload what kind of answer is that ?

I had the same problem as Cami. I've been trying to sign up for a Yahoo email address, and I keep getting denied due to the "error 999" message: unable to process request at this time. Just wondering what the deal is. I didn't think it was this hard to get an account!

I'm having the same thing, and I have to say I think the vast majority of people behind proxies aren't doing anything illegal or hidden, they are college students using dorm internet services (which I beleive to be my problem) Therefore, I have to say their policy is foolish.

Well it finally happened, I was stupid and got my password stolen. I've been a member of yahoo since 1998 with the same ID and lost that account tonight. All the help forums in the world are not going to get that account back. It seems that I cannot remember which zip code I used when I created the account 7+ years ago. Considering I have moved 5 times in the past 7 years it is no wonder. It also seems that I do not have an alternate email associated with my account. Strange, I seem to remember creating one, but then again that was so long ago who would remember? The only constant I have is my birthdate and Yahoo! in it's infinite wisdom has deemed that is not good enough to ID me. If there is anyone out there with a suggestion to get that account back I would be more than happy to listen. PLEASE help me !!!

It seems, so far, I'm the only one who's getting the 999 error when trying to access Yahoo games...but is a huge frustration. I have tried everything and nothing helps. Looks like we have to suck it up. *&^%$#@! Yahoo!

Biggest mistake of my life = signing up for yahoo music plus! with musicmatch. The musicmatch program encountered frequent errors because it should still be in testing so I uninstalled the old version of musicmatch and reinstalled the new one. Now I can’t log onto my account anymore using any version of musicmatch. No problem I’ll just contact yahoo and they’ll fix the problem. WRONG! Never have I dealt with such an inept bunch of idiots. For the past month I sent them messages pleading with them to restore the service that I paid for but to no avail. Get this: they just message me back every time and tell me to download the latest version of music match and enter in my name and password. HEY IDIOTS! THIS IS MY PROBLEM! I would just cancel my service but I signed up for a year (stupid I know). Long story short Yahoo sucks. I will never give them a dime of my money again.

I signed up for Yahoo unlimted music for a year and guess what? Everytime I try to login "error 999". there is no way to get around this since you are basically signing in thru the yahoo music engine. I'm out of my cash and no music access. Needless to say there is no... I repeat NO customer support to speak of, I am also a SBC customer and I got the whole run around from them. This is the most dissapointed I've been with a company. They take your money and don't provide you with a service. I'm going back to iTunes.

Obviously all these comments are written by jealous competitiors (like Linux users belittled the wonderful WIndows Me operating system). Yahoo does not provide any method of complaining directly about their site is because they know that they would be receiving only compliments because they are so wonderful.
