A Search Toolbar for Non-IE Users

Like sizable percentage of my engineering minded friends and coworkers who don't use Windows, I often find myself using Mozilla FireFox rather than Internet Explorer.

But being on a non-Windows platform means that none of the Search Toolbars work for us. In fact, I'm often asked when we'll see a toolbar for non-IE browsers.

Well, Pat McDonald e-mailed me to mention the FireFox Toolbar (beta, of course). And Ross Mayfield noticed it too. So I had to check it out.

True to its claims, it works just fine on Mac OS X. (It probably works just fine on Linux/BSD too.) It supports a ton of search services, including Yahoo Search and Yahoo Finance. I suspect we could add Yahoo News without much effort too.

Anyway, if you're a FireFox user, check it out.

Dave's Quick Search Deskbar http://dqsd.net/ is (to quote its accurate self-description) "an add-on for the Windows Desktop Taskbar that lets you launch searches quickly. With dozens of search engines, a calculator, clock, calendar, and more in one little textbox, it's monster functionality in a flea-sized GUI." It's also very user customisable and it's fairly easy to add your own searches (or request one on its mailing list). It works with most Windows browsers including IE, Mozilla and Firefox.

Mozilla and Firefox are cabable of keywords for URLs and variables in bookmarks. So go to your favourite search engine, do a search for a term you'll recognize in the URL, bookmark the search result, edit that bookmark, add a keyword (e.g. "y" for Yahoo search) and replace the search term you'd used with "%s" in the URL. For Yahoo this would result in:

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%s

Now you can start a search immediately by typing "y searchterm" as address and you'll never again understand what a search toolbar is good for.

Long time ago I added manually Yahoo! Search to my Opera replacing the default search engine (Google). I don't like these toolbars.

Cheers and sorry for my english.

There's a rival to FireFox and it's called Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com/). Has tabbed browsing, a ton of plug-ins and the abiltiy to customize the default search and any number of other search engines you might want to embed. And, there are mouse gestures. It runs off IE so Yahoo! pages with the tabbed search boxes operate just fine.

there is a safari plug in to use yahoo search instead of the installed provider - check out version tracker at

Along with the necessity to launch a toolabr for Gecko-based browsers, I personally think that the Yahoo toolbar, should be reworked with brand new icons which size could be customizable (small or big)

NeedleSearch works with Mozilla/Firefox and you can add ANY search engine with just two clicks.

Hurray for other browsers! Marcel how did you replace the google search bar in Opera with a Yahoo search bar?

Being a Firefox user, I was anxious to try the FireFox Toolbar extension out. Worked great, and replaced the only remaining tool I was still missing from IE. One thing I found missing was a way to search the Yahoo! Directory. Turns out that the extension makes it easy to add your own types of search to the menu of choices. If you are interested in having Dir. Search on your Firefox Toolbar, find the manage engines choice, create a new entry and put this in the url field: http://search.yahoo.com/search/dir?p=ubterms&fr=firefoxyahoobar
Then name it what you wish.

Thanks Jeremy for pointing it out.

i have 5 toolbars always open (file, navigation, bookmarks, yahoo, and tabs (which is at the bottom))

i have 2 more that i open when needed (web developer and stumbleupon)

i have a reasion for every toolbar that is open and for having the toolbars that i dont use often closed untill needed.

i put frequently accessed bookmarks on my bookmark toolbar for quick clicking, i have a roomy address and searchbox, i only have the toolbar buttons i use visible and even put the bookmark related buttons on my bookmark toolbar for most efficent use of space, as a yahoo user i want quick access to my yahoo functions such as news, weather, groups, and bookmarks. I even have toolbar wallpaper.

If having toolbars to make browsing a better experience does the opppisite then either your resolution or your monitor is too small. If you dont use the yahoo community or dont collect bookmarks or do web developing then yes a 2 or 3 toolbar (cant get rid of file and tabs, but you can put the address box on the file toolbar!) is great.

As far as convience goes i only have 2 complaints. 1) the yahoo companion for Firefox dosn't need a search box of its own, thats just redundant it can just auto add yahoo to the FX searchbox 2) a bookmarklet so that i can easily add bookmarks to yahoo bookmarks without installing the toolbar or having FX on a thumbdrive.
