Site Explorer Gets a Makeover

  • Posted August 21st, 2008 at 8:00 am by Yahoo! Search
  • Categories: Site Explorer

A few years ago, we launched Site Explorer with the goal of providing site owners with better visibility into how we index their websites and what data we use in our search service. Over the years we’ve moved beyond simply providing information to webmasters to allowing them to tell us what to do with their site, using functions such as submitting feeds, deleting URLs or reporting spam. Our most successful function among all has been Dynamic URL Rewriting. We’ve had thousands of site owners enter rules for their websites and webmasters auto-rewrite an average of 25,000 URLs per rule, with some sites rewriting millions of URLs in 1 shot.

Today, we launched a new look and feel for Site Explorer (http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/new) that provides a more dynamic interface to accommodate future feature roll-outs. The new interface also includes a new Site Summary page to provide statistics for authenticated sites. On top of this, we’re also increasing the number of rules for Dynamic URL Rewriting that you can enter from 3 to 10.

The new site is located at a special URL to give you some time to play around with it and update your tools that use our interface. We will make this the default experience soon, so please use this time to update your tools. And, as always, please give us feedback on your new experience. We want to hear from you!

The site map for our site, http://www.woya.com, has been submitted a few times, but Yahoo still has not started indexing the pages. Google has indexed over 50,000 pages in just a few weeks. So while having a fancier site explorer is nice, it would be nicer to make Slurp work just a bit harder :-)

Hello Priyank Garg, We met at SMX Sydney earlier this month.

The Yahoo Site Explorer is fantastic. When will the inbound links report display which links are “rel=nofollow” and what would be even better is to shown if the inbound link is an image links (show a thumbnail of the image) and whether the image link has alt text.

Refer to another site = http://www.backlinkwatch.com

I’m wondering if Site explorer is going to designate which links are no-followed or not. This would be helpful as the no-follow attribute becomes more important in the link structure internally and externally.

Please update the blog on this subject.

A very old link is still showing up in Yahoo results even though a robots file was created, and the file was removed. So I thought I’d try your SiteExplorer tool, but I’m thoroughly confused. I followed the directions on this page: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/search/siteexplorer/delete/siteexplorer-46.html

…and I cannot see am “Explore URL box”. After logging in to the main SiteExplorer page, I entered my URL into the box with the “Add My Site” button next to it, and it appeared in the list. When I clicked on the “Explore” button, my only options were to delete it from MySites or an “Explore Sites” button. A delete option was never displayed anywhere. What am I missing?

I would like to see the actual ranking of the page that got those clicks though. That would be helpful…

Most SEO guys know that Yahoo Site Explorer is a 1st phase task for properly positioning your site to be SEM friendly. I am initiating a new case study model to track at the onset, all of these moving parts.

I love the new look of site explorer. It makes it so much easier to check the stats of my web site. Now if Google and Site List from Bing would just do the same it would make everything much easier.
