Weather Report: Yahoo! Search update

  • Categories: Weather Report

We’ve been rolling out some changes to our fresh web data and crawling, indexing and ranking algorithms over the last few days. We expect the update will be completed by the weekend. So, as you know, throughout this process you may see some changes in ranking as well as some shuffling of the pages in the index.

Thanks for keeping the feedback coming.

Change in Yahoo search is welcome. Several forums that I read talk about the quality of search in Yahoo vs your competition. I have to agree with them. It appears as though the other search engines are returning more useful results.

Good luck with your changes. I would really like to see better results from Yahoo.

Spam has moved into the top positions, the quality sites have gained, from 68 to 63.

Big losses in image clicks due to Flicker, should we be selling our products and services on Flicker? Can I suggest a new Tabs: Images and Flicker.

PS I am glad you did not buy MSN

I love the new search suggestions. It makes search intuitive and the results are good to make me switch to Yahoo as the prime search provider.

However my pet peeve is the position of the search bar. I used to use yahoo a lot more before you redesigned the site. Now it is up and to the LEFT and it is not ergonomically friendly. I suggest you do an A/B test or better still allow users to build their own page to position the search bar where they like. I would come back to yahoo in a minute. Note I have been a yahoo user in one form or another since 96

Thanks

Dump all of the Yahoo Directory listings from Yahoo Search. Most are terribly outdated. I´m seeing some that are unchanged from when they were first listed over five years ago and now have little relevance to the present sites they represent. I find it bizarre that no one at Yahoo has noticed this yet.

I hope that you have place less emphasis on the URL name to stop content robbers ripping off sites putting the same content with more relevant URL and placing higher on the searches very frustrating.

2007-07-23 04:11:40

I would like to see the longer hosted sites have more relevance than the newbies, also agree with Mr.Heath’s comment.

This blog and Yahoo Buzz are the most interesting things happened to Yahoo. I like these. Moreover Yahoo searched is improved a lot in the recent years. I mostly search on Yahoo.

I am happy to see that Yahoo is at least trying to keep us in the loop as to what they are doing. This type of information is vital for those that are serious about tracking the progress and results in regard to our websites and businesses.

I have pretty much given up on Yahoo… one update I have good ranking another update it drops to the second page and then up on the first page during this update, although I should be happy but between the last 3 updates I have not touched my site but still the rank fluctuates, so I am really not sure if what ever I had done is right or wrong. Honestly, updates info like these are useless because it really does not tell me anything… Priyank, you are better off not telling us any thing because honestly its not helping since I am as ignorant as far as yahoo ranking is concerned as I was before you put up that weather report…

Good results, as far as I can see. Better than before the update.

2007-07-24 08:36:09

You know what? It’s great that y’all are doing something but the fact is I just did a search for my top keywords and the SERP is:

1) Basically the same as they were before this update except that they now include things that have nothing to do with the keywords at all like (Domain Name Reservation Services and Snipr | Snipurl 2.0 | Snurl – Snippetty snip snip with your looong URLs!)

2) The descriptions that are being displayed under the titles of the websites with my keyword phrases are so shortened it’s a wonder that anyone can tell what the websites are about without having to guess. It would be great to see a normal description instead of two random incomplete sentences; 1 from the actual description the webmaster wrote that yahoo cuts to an average length of 74 Characters and 2 from a random sentence that is listed within the webpage that happens to have the keywords that were used to do the search and that is also cut to an average of 78-80 Characters. Why can’t there just be one description (preferably the one that the webmaster embedded in their coding) that consists of about 150 Characters and makes it clear what the website is actually about? If the original description is longer than that then either cut it at 150 characters or drop the ranking a few spots until the webmaster complies with the type of description that Yahoo wants.

3) Lastly what is the sense of listing one website twice back to back if it comes from the same domain for the same keyword. When searching for my keyword in the SERP I found both the domain (www.blahblahblah.com) and right under that (www.blahblahblah.com/blah.htm) so that webmaster has to be very happy since they get the #3 and #4 spots on the first page of the results. A good search result to me would have been to see whichever webpage that had more weight for the keyword and another listing from someone else that deserved the next spot in the SERP.

There are other small things but this is shocking to me considering that upgrades are to make things better not more complicated for the searcher or the webmasters that supply the content for these engines.

you are still missing a lot of sites, I think most of the sites missing is sites where you have baned a whole IP blocks, which is pure stupid.

when I make a search I always have to think, what am I missing and then go to google.

Also your rankings are still not much worth, but you maybe know that when you compare to other SEs

It would be nice to see the SERPs updating a little more often. With most of the other major search engines provided your website has enough link strength any onsite changes you make affected your ranking within a few days of re-indexing. Cheers.

That’s a good news but i don’t think so their is any big changes in yahoo search cause it showing me the same results which i was getting before 2 weeks ago.

I noticed a big change in the number of inlinks throughout the day (i.e. 400-2000). My ranking also varies a lot (#2 in the morning and #20 in the evening). Is this normal as a result of the search update?

Well, I am seeing a little more yahoo referals to my site. Both of your major competitors seem to like my site and blog better though, and I do have lots of content!

And I have yahoo as my home page too! No loyalty back, I guess. You know Yahoo — the whole world is not about youtube and wicki-spam-pedia.

Looks like they have aging filters now on links. Some of my newer sites did not make it, older sites with less quality and fewer links are beating my new ones. Onpage is very close to the other sites also.

I wonder if yahoo is now using their version of LSI and a Sandbox (link aging filters)??

Its great to see pureplays starting to do well in the Yahoo! SERP, its about time the likes of Tesco, Argos, Amazon, eBay etc took a back seat for competitive keywords.

Apart from this, anyone seeing any major changes in the UK|

I’ve noticed more activity from yahoo spiders on my blogs. I wonder how much they increased the scanning of the page.. I think they also eat a bit more bandwidth now.
