The New Yahoo! Bookmarks and Toolbar Get a Refresh

Back in October we launched the new Yahoo! Bookmarks and Yahoo! Toolbar to make it easier for users to save, organize, and find their favorite websites. Key features included the ability to easily organize with folders or tags, and the ability to instantly find bookmarks directly from the Yahoo! Toolbar searchbox. Today, we’re announcing the general availability, on Firefox and IE, with a few new updates including integration with popular Yahoo! properties, personalized recommendations for suggested bookmarks and enhanced features for organizing and managing bookmarks.

Based directly on the feedback we received from our customers, here’s what bookmarks and toolbar now offer:

Bookmarks Quick List
To help navigate and organize bookmarks better, IE users (to start) can now move any bookmark into a “Quick List” and it will appear at the top level of the Yahoo! Bookmarks menu (instead of in a folder sub-menu). Users can limit the number of bookmarks that are in the Quick List by going to the Yahoo! Bookmarks Preferences.

New Integrations with Yahoo! Properties
To provide a more personalized experience, bookmarks now offers integration with Yahoo! Mail to quickly and easily save links directly from email. With the huge number of links received through email, it’s about bringing the bookmarks functionality to places that users need it most. In the future, users can look forward to additional bookmarks integration with other Yahoo! properties.

I like this a lot better than Google Bookmarks. My only suggestion…make it possible to create a new category when you’re in the middle of creating a new bookmark. Otherwise you have to bail out mid entry, create the new category, and then come back to the entry. Of course by that point you’ve lost the data you originally entered and you have to start over.
Thanks!

REFRESH????? As of April 6th?

I’m still dealing with the same old problems.

The one thing still missing IS A “Refresh Bookmarks” button, because the “Refresh Toolbars” button doesn’t work to update the bookmarks dropdown after I’ve made a change on the Y!Bookmarks web page. And it doesn’t make it magically appear when when my list of bookmarks mysteriously disappears. Which happens quite often – I’m just left with an empty dropdown.

If I’m forced go to the MyY! Bookmarks page to create a folder or subfolder or move something around, I have no way to update my dropdown. It just doesn’t reflect the changes. In an open window, I’m left with an out of date dropdown list. If I open a new window, I’m often shown an empty dropdown list. Until sometime in the future, it just happens to repopulate the dropdown. But I still can’t figure out the timeframe for this mysterious background refresh.

For example, I made changes last night using the Y!Bookmarks web page. I have one window open from last night with the still out of date dropdown and I opened another brand new window just an hour ago, over 12 hours after making changes to the the My!Bookmarks web page and the new window not only doesn’t show the changes, my dropdown is just empty. And I have no way to force a refresh or update.

I know this is an ongoing issue, because I emailed Y! back in October and then again a few weeks back. In a very long email where they went on and on about unrelated issues, the final paragraph finally stated that this was a known problem and to get the dropdown to repopulate I should try to double click or several click the little down arrow of the dropdown list. It worked once or twice, but hasn’t since. Once again I’m left with an out of date or empty dropdown.

Any suggestions?

Has the “edit url” function been added to the edit of the bookmarks yet? If its not being added, is there a reason that this feature is not there?

If a website is redesigned which in our web2.0 happens every 3 months it seems. URLs change constantly… Deleting and re-creating a bookmark seems silly to me. Would love ot know the reason that this was eliminated. Unless you are using URL as a unique indicator. Which seems well… you could have used a GUID of some sort. But that’s just me.

Duke and Tom,

The import function of the new toolbar is improving. But it still leaves some previous folders from being imported, especially folders within a folder. Please look into my DICTIONARY folder. The FRENCH folder is not imported.

Also, looks like the import function does not do well in importing “many folders” within a folder. Please look into my MEDICINE folder. Previously it has dozens of subfolder, but now all is gone except one. If this could be fixed, that will mean the import function is coming closer to perfection.

Thanks for your hard work. I still believe in Yahoo!Toolbar and Bookmarks.

Hi
Since downloading the new toolbar a few weeks ago, Yahoo bookmarks will no longer “save to My Web” by pressing the drop down button. The only way I can save pages is by opening a separate tab, opening and My Web and manually adding the new address.

Anybody else had this/solved this ?
Thanks
KL

I have the same problem. I’ve written a bunch of times, and surprise! no answer.

How about considering the wishes of the user, and not the neat-o do-dads that the programmer can make? Personally, I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about bookmarks — I just want them to work. And right now, as far as I’m concerned, they don’t. If this doesn’t get solved, I’ll be looking for another bookmark holder. Suggestions, anyone?

The toolbar and bookmarks are very cool…..when they work. I’m now on my 3rd Yahoo account because the bookmarks toolbar is so flaky.

My first account, one day the toolbar decided it will not synch with the bookmarks website. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get them to synch. So I exported all the bookmarks into a second Yahoo account.

All worked fine on my second Yahoo account for a couple weeks, then one day, poof all the bookmarks had been deleted. All the folders are still there, but they are all empty. Luckily I still had my exported bookmarks on my hard drive, so now I’m on my 3rd yahoo account.

Please fix these annoying problems.

Just to cover as many bases as possible, here’s a link to a thread in the toolbar forum where a couple of us have pleaded for the Firefox version of the toolbar to have the same functionality as the IE version, particularly in relation to the Bookmarks integration:

Any comments (Yahoo) guys?

Released with only 3 show stoppers.
1. On toolbar the bookmarks do not always show. Sometimes even the toolbar refresh does not work.

2. Why can’t I edit the URL? Why do I have to delete the entry?

3. trailing /slash / added. I bookmark http:/xxxx.com/ddddd and you save it as http://xxxx.com/ddddd/ <- not real URL. This makes Bug 2 even more painful.

Yahoo Bookmarks are just awful! AWFUL! I love everything else but I need to manage bookmarks. The stupid dialog has a huge delay when you save a new bookmark. I want this to be fast and allow me to choose which folder. It is cumbersome at best.

YAHOO! PLEASE ENHANCE BOOKMARKS – AGAIN!

Yahoo Bookmarks is standard on all my Firefox and IE browsers. It makes it real easy to move from one computer/platform to another.

Can you add the ability to edit URL? We have this wiki site where the URL ends with a Wiki name. However, Yahoo Bookmarks adds an exta ‘/’ backslash in the URL. This results to a 404, it’s not insurmountable, just remove the extra ‘/’ in the address panel and the page will load. I just wish that I can edit the URL.
