Toolbar and Messenger raise their Y!Q
When we
href="http://www.ysearchblog.com/archives/000074.html">first
released Y!Q Contextual
Search we also provided a
href="http://yq.search.yahoo.com/publisher/examples.html">Y!Q
Demobar for download. With the Y!Q Demobar, you could highlight
not just a few words, but an entire sentence, a paragraph, or even a
complete article, and use that selection to trigger a search.
With the Y!Q Demobar, you could enjoy two of Y!Q’s most important
benefits:
- Not having to worry about query articulation. Select as much
text as you want and Y!Q will “automagically” determine the context
from your selection and provide the most relevant results. (Try
copying and pasting long text into a regular search box for comparison
and you will notice the difference.) - Getting search results on the
spot without leaving the page that you’re on. Y!Q gives you your
results in a small overlay window. Some of my colleagues call this a
“search snack.” (Does that make search results in a full-size window a
search “meal”?)
We received lots of positive feedback after the initial release of
the Y!Q but many of you were asking: “Why do I need to download an
extra toolbar? Why not just add Y!Q to the regular
href="http://toolbar.yahoo.com">Yahoo! Toolbar“?
Good news: We heard the feedback, and the latest version of the
Yahoo! Toolbar for Internet Explorer now supports Y!Q (integrated along with other cool
features, such as saving to
href="http://myweb.search.yahoo.com/myweb">My Web and
href="http://music.yahoo.com/">Y! Music Engine controls). Install
the latest Yahoo! Toolbar, select several words from the web page
you’re reading, and you’ll see an actuator icon. Select the “Search”
menu item and you’ll get contextual search results, right at “the
point of inspiration” when you see something interesting on the web
(see Figure below)
But we didn’t stop with Toolbar. We also added Y!Q to the new
version of Yahoo! Messenger with
Voice, within the
href="http://messenger.yahoo.com/feat_search.php;_ylt=AtUgTHafZY.E6viMZSuVo_NnMMIF">LiveWords
feature. Activate LiveWords from the Yahoo! Messenger preferences menu
and interesting words in your IM conversation are under-lined. Click
on those words to trigger a search, or just as with Toolbar, select
message text to trigger a Y!Q search (see Figure below)
Moving towards a “select and click model” for searching takes a
little getting used to. I was used to sometimes typing in long and
specific queries in a toolbar or search box, which worked fine most of
the time. Now that I’m using the latest Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo!
Messenger, I don’t miss the typing or cutting-and-pasting at all.
We don’t think you’ll miss them either, so please give it a try
within Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Messenger, and let us know what you
think. We’re always interested in learning more on how to improve
Y!Q.

Is this available for Firefox? I have the latest toolbar in Firefox and I don’t see any of this coolness. Am I missing something?
To anonymous commenter,
Reread: “We heard the feedback, and the latest version of the Yahoo! Toolbar for **Internet Explorer** now supports Y!Q …”
I know that only a few are using linux, but will it be available on linux? I used the Y!Toolbar and it works fine.
It does seem to work in Firefox :(
Yah I saw that in Messenger, really cool. I saw Batman Begins too! I thought it was great!
This is a helpful add-on!
one minor suggestion:
going to the toolbar.yahoo.com homepage - there is NO mention of this -
(posting in the blog informs Thousands - Posting on the Yahoo Site informs Millions)
For the love of Pete, could we please get a little love on the Mac Yahoo! IM client?! It’s essentially abandonware at this point. Any chance we’ll see some revitalized effort to bring the Mac client functionality into 2005?
I second the Mac OS X Yahoo! IM client motion. With Dashboard widgets et al, this is the time to court Mac users and build brand loyalty! What gives?
I’d like to third the request for an upgrade to Yahoo Messenger for the Mac. The Windows version has seen countless additions (I’m not sure they all qualify as improvements) and I would like to see at least a few new features on the Mac side. For example, it would be nice if LAUNCHcast and/or Yahoo Music Unlimited capability was either included in the new Y!IM or made available separately.
I think an interface update would be nice. Not saying you have to go the brushed metal route, but OTOH it would be nice to have an interface that looks more Aqua than the current one.

Guys, I just found this blog…maybe I am slightly off topic, was searching for a place to give my suggestion for the messenger. Can you guy make tabs or links in the overview tab on the messenger to link to all the services that Yahoo offers using the same yahoo ID…for example, photos and briefcase, I am sure this will help full for many people, save them time looking up for bookmarks or links on the web. I also notice that the tabs are growing in size and becoming distractive, please look into it.
I also have a problem with messenger 7, when signing in using firewall with no proxies…the messenger does not show who comes online and who leaves and the contact list is not updated unless I sign out and sign in again…this is a commom problem among the ppl I knw..thanks.
Cool stuff. I work in enterprise KM for a big tech company and contextual search is something I’m interested in…
On a personal note, I’m a Mac user and disappointed that I can’t easily try this thing. I think a lot of technology companies are missing the boat by developing exclusively for Windows. Many technology early adopters and thought leaders are on *nix platforms like Mac or Linux — Bill Joy is a Mac user, for example. If you don’t hook the early adopters, how are you going to “cross the chasm”?
I’d like to see more love on the Mac Messenger. It would be great if it could be brought up to date with the Windows one. The context stuff, F3 stuff and avatars are great on the Windows version. I’d also like to see inproved webcam and voice on the Mac version. OS X is stable now.
Please bring Mac Messenger up to date !!!!
fine i want to place to system
I have a private room under yahoo group and i want to know how does other people get into it ?? people that no one else knows in the room..
Can you please set up a way to default to the last sign-in’s status message? I always forget to change mine, since it boots automatically with Windows…

Messenger for macosx 2.5.3 build 1062
Also no support anywhere for this.
Can you PLEASEEEEEEEE find something for the mac? its annoying, i want a upgrade but I can’t find one. If someone knows a upgrade please leave on here in your next comment or something!!!!!!
i m searching for free yahoo toolbar with search,mail& messenger. so can u plz get me the info ,where & how to get it download.
I’m looking towards Yahoo! for a new version of Yahoo! Messenger Mac with BT Connect (and potentially MSN Messenger support) *nod nod wink wink*
My yahoo messenger keeps on connecting for whole day and does not show up the list. When minimised and when I try to exit it asks me to log-out. It means I am visible to all others in my list but I am not able to view my list. For last 7 years I am breathing yahoo messenger and can’t help but to have it on when ever I am online. I have tried reinstalling all the versions but to vein. Tried all the settings even restarted my system after changing settings
My husband and I use the latest YM now. But is seems like some hackers hack his YM. I kept receiving messages that is not actually from him and most of them are URLs. some of them even contains bad words. hackers can even change his current YM status
Regarding the upgraded beta IM messenger upgrade for MAC
I don’t like it and use the old one instead…why aren’t the little animated comments there??? sheeesh so long a wait for so little in improvement. Also I love my door knock and door closing sounds…also the shattering glass when someone answers me…the new sounds are too low and I cannot hear them…also I don’t particularly find them interesting… bring back the good things of the old Messenger and let’s really upgrade Messenger to the level that Windows is…it has been much too long and it is lousy that Yahoo with all it’s resources has not done it yet. Also some things are not easy to find…why can’t i change my font easily …you hid so many things that are right there in the old version? I won’t use the new one until things change for the better! Very disappointing Yahoo!
